EPCS
offers services to UW-Madison School of Education graduate students pursuing careers in higher
education. Services include dossier, curriculum
vitae review, and job-search
consultation.
This site
has been designed to provide you with some basic job-search information.
We encourage you to make an appointment with your EPCS consultant to help
you map out your strategies.
- The
academic job-hunting season for most disciplines runs from fall through
spring (See Higher Education Timeline)
- Your department
will most likely be your best source of information regarding the normal
job-search process in your discipline
- Most academic
positions are posted long in advance
- For
entry-level positions, students trying to finish their dissertations
need to expect to spend substantial time drafting application letters
and checking postings in the late fall (see Getting
Started)
- Some disciplines
schedule mid-winter (December) meetings where initial screening interviews
can take place
- Otherwise,
students can expect to see interviewing traditionally starting in February
through March
- Students
need to be prepared to have a scholarly talk ready on their dissertation
topic for on-site interviewing
- This time
frame allows for most departments to bring candidates on campus for
interviews, make offers, and complete the cycle by the end of the academic
year
PhD
Survey Report
For many years EPCS had conducted a UW-Madison campus-wide
survey of the employment status of graduated PhD students. Reports have
been put on-line at: PhD
Survey Report.
